Cellardoor (2012)

Cellardoor (2012)

By Alan Parker (partner and collaborator)

Commissioned by the 2012 Dance Umbrella (March 2012), at The Dance Factory, Johannesburg, South Africa. Co-produced by the First Physical Theatre Company

2013 National Arts Festival (July 2013), at Centenary Hall, Grahamstown, South Africa

Created and choreographed by Alan Parker (for the First Physical Theatre Company)

The title, Cellardoor, is a phrase often referred to in linguistic writings on beauty, as the most beautiful phrase in the English language.

Most English-speaking people, for instance, will admit that ‘cellar door’ is beautiful, especially if dissociated from its sense (and its spelling).  More beautiful than, say, ‘sky’, and far more beautiful than ‘beautiful’. (JRR Tolkien)

In this work we have created a series of moments, images, ideas and representations of ‘Beauty’, expressed in physical, aural and visual form.

Beauty is often found at the limits of the ugly. (Sarah Nuttal)

Designed by Gavin Krastin
